What JFIF is
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard file format for JPEG images. Windows sometimes saves downloaded pictures with the .jfif extension instead of .jpg, and some apps don’t recognise it. Inside, it’s an ordinary JPEG photo.
How to convert JFIF to PNG
- Choose your
.jfiffiles or drop them on the box above. - Each image is decoded and saved as a lossless PNG.
- Download them individually, or all together as a ZIP.
JFIF to PNG or JFIF to JPG?
| You need | Use |
|---|---|
A file that ends in .jpg for an upload form |
JFIF to JPG: instant, same size and quality |
| An image you’ll edit and save repeatedly | JFIF to PNG: no further quality loss |
| A file for a design tool or app that requires PNG | JFIF to PNG |
| The smallest file for sharing | JFIF to JPG |
Why PNG for editing
Each time a JPEG is edited and saved, it’s compressed again and loses a little more detail, which shows up as blocky artefacts after a few rounds. PNG is lossless: save it as often as you like and it stays exactly the same. Converting once to PNG before a round of editing protects the image from further damage.
Converting a folder of JFIF images
Select all the files at once, or drag the whole selection onto the box. Each one becomes a PNG with the same name, and Download all as ZIP saves them together in one step.
Opening JFIF files without converting
JFIF images already open in most places: Windows Photos and Paint, the Mac’s Preview and Photos, and every web browser. Converting is only needed when an app or website rejects the .jfif name, or when you want a PNG for editing.
Privacy
The conversion uses your browser’s built-in image engine. Your images stay on your device and are never uploaded.
Questions
Will converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. A JFIF file is a JPEG, and any detail lost to JPEG compression is already gone. PNG stores the picture exactly as it is now, so it won't lose more quality when you edit and save it again.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly, while JPEG throws away detail you can't easily see. For photos, a PNG is often three to five times larger. If you only need a file ending in .jpg, use JFIF to JPG instead, which keeps the size.
Does PNG add a transparent background?
No. JFIF images have no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. You can remove the background afterwards in an image editor.
When should I choose PNG over JPG?
When you'll edit and re-save the image several times, when an app or website specifically asks for PNG, or when you're adding text and graphics to it. For sharing photos, JPG is smaller and just as good.
