JFIF to JPG converter

Change .jfif images to .jpg so every website and app accepts them. A JFIF file is already a JPEG inside, so it's renamed without any quality loss.

    Why convert JFIF to JPG

Some upload forms, government sites, job applications and older apps only accept files ending in .jpg or .jpeg. They reject .jfif even though it’s the same kind of image. Renaming the file to .jpg solves this immediately.

How to convert JFIF to JPG

    1. Choose your .jfif files or drop them on the box above.
    2. Each file is checked to make sure it’s a JPEG inside, then given a .jpg name.
    3. Download the JPGs, one by one or together as a ZIP.

Because nothing is re-encoded, it’s instant even for large batches, and the result is exactly as sharp as the original.

Stop Windows saving images as JFIF

The cause is a Windows registry value that sets .jfif as the extension for JPEG images. It changes when certain apps are installed. Editing the registry can break things if done wrongly, so only do this if you’re comfortable with it:

    1. Press Windows + R, type regedit and press Enter.
    2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image\jpeg.
    3. Double-click Extension and change the value from .jfif to .jpg.
    4. Restart your browser. New downloads save as .jpg.

If you’d rather not edit the registry, keep using this converter, or rename the files by hand.

Save as JPG straight from the browser

You can also avoid JFIF when downloading. Instead of clicking or dragging an image, right-click it and choose Save image as. In the save window, change the end of the file name from .jfif to .jpg and save. The image is identical; only the name changes.

    JFIF, JPG and JPEG

.jpg, .jpeg, .jfif, .jfi and .jif are all extensions for JPEG images. .jpg became the common one because early versions of Windows only allowed three-letter extensions. The image inside is the same.

    Privacy

The files are checked and renamed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

    Questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes, for practical purposes. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard way JPEG images are stored. Nearly every .jpg file is a JFIF file. Only the extension differs, which is why this conversion doesn't change the picture at all.

Why do my downloaded images save as .jfif?

On some Windows computers, a registry setting maps the JPEG file type to the .jfif extension, so Chrome and Edge save downloaded JPEGs as .jfif. The images themselves are normal JPEGs.

Can I just rename the file myself?

Yes. Change the extension from .jfif to .jpg in File Explorer and the picture opens normally. This tool does the same for many files at once and checks that each one really is a JPEG.

    Will the quality change?

No. The image data is kept byte for byte, so the JPG is identical to the JFIF, with the same size and quality.
