Why convert JPG to PNG
JPG is the normal format for photos, but it has one weakness: every time a JPG is edited and saved, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. Converting to PNG first freezes the image as it is. From then on you can crop, annotate and save as often as you like without further loss.
Common reasons people need a PNG:
- a design tool, game engine, sticker app or upload form only accepts PNG
- you are about to edit the image several times, for example adding text or arrows
- you want to cut out the background later in an editor that works best with PNG
- you are putting the image into a document or slide where sharp overlays matter
What it won’t do
Converting can’t undo JPG compression. If the original shows blocky patches or fuzzy edges, the PNG shows exactly the same. It also can’t create transparency: the background stays solid until you remove it in an editing tool.
How to use this converter
Choose one or more JPG or JPEG files, or drop them on the box above. Files ending in .jfif, a name some browsers give to saved JPEG images, work too. Each image is converted on your device and gets its own download button. The size change is shown for each file, so expect the number to go up: that is normal for PNG.
What happens to the details
- Orientation is applied. Photos that phones store sideways with a rotation flag come out the right way up.
- Metadata such as camera settings, date and GPS location is not carried over.
- Colour is converted to the standard sRGB colour space that browsers use. Photos from most phones and cameras already use sRGB, so they look the same.
- Dimensions stay exactly the same.
What about JFIF files?
A .jfif file is a JPEG. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) describes how JPEG data is packaged, and almost every JPG file follows it. Windows sometimes saves pictures downloaded from the web with a .jfif extension because of how a system setting maps the JPEG file type.
You don’t need a special converter for JFIF:
- To get a PNG, choose the
.jfiffile here. This converter accepts it exactly like a.jpg. - To get a JPG, just rename the file from
.jfifto.jpg. Nothing inside needs to change.
Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. Detail that JPG compression already removed can't be brought back. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it looks now, and it won't lose any more detail when you edit and save it again.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. To remove a background you need an editing tool after converting.
Why is the PNG file so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, while JPG throws detail away to save space. A photo as PNG is often three to ten times larger than the JPG it came from.
Is the photo's location data kept?
No. The PNG is written from the image pixels only, so EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location is not copied. This makes the PNG safer to share.
