When to convert PNG to JPG

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges. For photos, that exactness costs space: a PNG photo is often three to ten times larger than a JPG that looks the same. Converting photos to JPG makes them faster to email, upload and load on a website.

    Good reasons to convert:

    • a website or form only accepts JPG
    • you need to email or share many photos and the PNG files are too big
    • you exported photos from an editor or phone as PNG by mistake

    Reasons to keep the PNG:

    • the image has transparent areas you need
    • it is mostly text, line art or a screenshot, where JPG adds blurry halos around edges
    • you will keep editing it, since each JPG save loses a little more detail

    How to use this converter

Choose one or more PNG files, or drop them on the box above. Each file is converted straight away and gets its own download button. The size change appears next to each file, so you can see how much space you saved.

    Choosing a quality setting

The quality slider controls how hard the JPG encoder compresses the image. 85% is a sensible default for photos. Go down to 70% if file size matters more than detail, for example for web thumbnails. Go up to 95% for prints or images you plan to edit later. Above 95% the file grows a lot with almost no visible gain.

What changes in the converted file

    • Transparency becomes white, because JPG has no alpha channel.
    • Colour depth drops to 8 bits per channel. PNG files saved with 16 bits per channel lose that extra precision, which only matters for professional editing.
    • Metadata such as text chunks stored in the PNG is not copied to the JPG.
    • Dimensions stay exactly the same.

PNG to JPG on Mac, Windows and iPhone

This converter works the same in any browser, but every system also has a built-in way:

    • Mac: open the PNG in Preview, choose File › Export, set Format to JPEG and pick a quality. To convert many PNGs at once, select them in Finder, right-click and choose Quick Actions › Convert Image.
    • Windows: open the PNG in Paint and choose File › Save as › JPEG picture. Paint has no quality setting.
    • iPhone: screenshots are saved as PNG. Open this page in Safari and choose your screenshots from Photo Library or Files; each one is converted on the phone.

The built-in apps are fine for one or two files. This converter is quicker for batches, lets you set the quality, shows the size saving, and downloads everything as one ZIP.

    Questions

Will converting PNG to JPG lower the quality?

A little. JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded. At 85% quality the difference is hard to see in photos. Sharp text and flat graphics show artefacts sooner, so keep those as PNG.

    What happens to transparent areas?

JPG can't store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white. If you need transparency, keep the PNG or convert it to WebP instead.

Is there a file size or number limit?

There is no fixed limit. Very large images, over about 100 megapixels, can run out of memory on phones. Desktop browsers handle most images without trouble.

    Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the PNG and writes the JPG on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.
