    What an ICO file is

ICO is the Windows icon format. Unlike PNG, one ICO file can hold several copies of an image at different sizes. Browsers use it for favicons, the small icons in tabs, bookmarks and history, and Windows uses it for program, folder and shortcut icons.

    How to make a favicon

    1. Choose your PNG logo or drop it on the box above. A square, transparent PNG of 256 × 256 pixels or more works best.
    2. Download the .ico file.
    3. Rename it to favicon.ico and upload it to the root folder of your website, so it’s available at yoursite.com/favicon.ico.
    4. Optionally add this line inside your page’s <head>: <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">.

Browsers request /favicon.ico automatically, so many sites work even without the line.

Designing a logo that works at 16 pixels

At 16 × 16 pixels, detail disappears. For a clear favicon:

    • use a simplified mark or a single letter instead of the full logo with text
    • use bold shapes and strong contrast
    • remove thin lines and small text
    • leave only a little padding around the shape

Preview your result in a browser tab; if it’s hard to recognise, simplify the PNG and convert again.

    Sizes and where they’re used

    Size Used for
    16 × 16 Browser tabs, address bar
    32 × 32 Taskbar, bookmarks on high-resolution screens
    48 × 48 Windows desktop and Explorer
    64, 128 Larger Windows views
    256 × 256 Large icons and high-DPI displays

Other icons your site may need

Apple devices use a separate 180 × 180 PNG called an apple-touch-icon, and web app manifests use 192 and 512 pixel PNGs. Resize your logo to those sizes with the image resizer.

    Privacy

Your logo is converted in your browser with ImageMagick, and nothing is uploaded.

    Questions

Which sizes are inside the ICO file?

Six sizes in one file, 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, so browsers, Windows Explorer, taskbars and shortcuts each pick the sharpest one.

My logo isn't square. What happens?

It's centred on a transparent square canvas, so it isn't stretched or cropped. For the best small icons, start from a square logo with little empty space around it.

What size should my PNG be?

At least 256 × 256 pixels, so the largest icon is sharp. Bigger images are scaled down automatically.

    Do I still need a favicon.ico today?

Modern browsers also accept PNG and SVG favicons, but favicon.ico is still the most compatible option. Many sites provide both.
