How to save frames from a video

    1. Choose what to save: a single frame from the middle or the start, 10 or 30 evenly spaced frames, or one frame every 1, 5 or 10 seconds.
    2. Choose your video or drop it on the box above.
    3. Download the JPG, or a ZIP of all the frames.

    Uses

    • Thumbnails for YouTube, a blog or a portfolio.
    • Contact sheets to see what’s in a long recording at a glance.
    • Stills from a family video to print or share.
    • Reference images for drawing, analysis or training.
    • Screenshots from a screen recording for documentation.

    Getting the best still

    • Choose 10 or 30 evenly spaced frames, then keep the sharpest ones.
    • For a specific moment, trim the video to a short clip around it first, then save frames every second.
    • Frames from 4K or high-bitrate footage have far more detail than ones from compressed web videos.

    Image quality

Frames are decoded at full resolution with your browser’s video decoder and saved as JPG at 92% quality, which is visually identical to the decoded frame. JPG keeps files small for sharing; to edit and re-save frames many times, convert them to PNG afterwards.

Why not just take a screenshot?

A screenshot captures your screen, not the video. It’s limited to your screen’s resolution, includes any player controls or scaling, and on phones is often smaller than the video itself. Saving the frame directly gives you the exact pixels recorded, at full resolution, with no player interface in the way.

Frames from videos recorded in portrait are saved upright, in the orientation the video plays in.

    Privacy

The video is decoded inside your browser using Mediabunny, an open-source media library. It isn’t uploaded, and the images are created on your device.

    Questions

    What resolution are the images?

    The video's own resolution. Frames from a 1080p video are 1920 × 1080 JPGs, and from 4K they're 3840 × 2160. Portrait videos give portrait images.

Why do some frames look blurry?

A video frame catches motion, so anything moving fast is blurred, unlike a photo taken with a fast shutter. Frames from steady shots look sharpest. Taking several evenly spaced frames lets you pick the best one.

    How are the images named?

Each name includes the time in the video where the frame was taken, such as clip-01m05.0s.jpg, so they sort in order and you can find the moment again.

How many frames can I save?

Up to 500 per video. For one frame every second, that covers videos up to about 8 minutes; use every 5 or 10 seconds for longer ones.
