    How to crop a video

    1. Choose the shape you need.
    2. Choose your videos or drop them on the box above.
    3. Download the cropped MP4s.

The crop is calculated for each video, so you can process landscape and portrait videos together.

    Turning landscape video into vertical

Most cameras record landscape (16:9) video, but Reels, TikTok and Shorts fill the screen with vertical 9:16. Cropping keeps the centre third of a landscape frame. It works well for a single person talking, a product or anything filmed in the middle; it doesn’t suit wide scenes like landscapes or groups, which lose too much at the sides.

    What you get

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which every phone and social network accepts. The sound is kept unchanged when it’s already AAC, as in most phone videos. The resolution is the original’s height or width, cropped to the new shape, so no detail is lost beyond the parts removed.

Resulting sizes from a 1080p video

    Shape From landscape 1920 × 1080
    Vertical 9:16 608 × 1080
    Portrait 4:5 864 × 1080
    Square 1:1 1080 × 1080

Each keeps the full height of the original, so the picture is as sharp as before, just narrower.

    Privacy

The video is cropped inside your browser using its built-in video encoder and Mediabunny, an open-source media library. It’s never uploaded.

    Questions

Which part of the video is kept?

The centre. The crop removes equal amounts from both edges, so it works best when the subject is in the middle of the frame, as it usually is in phone videos and interviews.

    Does cropping reduce quality?

Cropping removes the edges, so the result has fewer pixels, and the video is re-encoded at high quality. A 1920 × 1080 landscape video cropped to 9:16 becomes 608 × 1080, which still looks sharp on phones.

What's the difference between cropping and resizing?

Cropping cuts off part of the picture to change its shape. Resizing keeps the whole picture and makes it smaller. To get a vertical video from a landscape one without losing the sides, you'd need to add bars instead of cropping.

    How long does it take?

Cropping changes the picture, so the video is re-encoded. That runs at about the speed of playback on a typical computer.
