How to trim a video
- Choose a video or drop it on the box above. A preview opens.
- Play the video and press Use current time next to Start when you reach the first moment you want to keep. Do the same for End.
- Or type the times directly, as minutes:seconds.
- Press Trim video, then download the MP4.
Several videos can be added at once; they open one after another so each gets its own start and end.
Fast, lossless trimming
Most videos from phones, cameras and screen recorders use H.264. For those, the trimmed part is copied straight from the original without being decoded and compressed again, so:
- it’s identical in quality to the original;
- it takes seconds, even for long videos;
- the file is simply the original’s size for the part you kept.
Videos in other formats, such as VP9 WebM or HEVC from iPhones, have to be re-encoded to H.264. That runs at about the speed of playback on a typical computer, at high quality.
Common uses
- Remove the fumbling seconds at the start and end of a phone recording.
- Cut a meeting or lecture recording down to the part that matters.
- Shorten a clip to fit a platform limit, such as a 60-second Story or a status update.
- Keep just a highlight from a long game or sports recording.
Tips
- For the cleanest result, start just after a pause or a change of scene.
- If you need a very short clip for social media, trim first, then use the crop or compress tools.
- Keep the original until you’ve checked the trimmed video plays correctly.
Privacy
The video is read and trimmed in your browser by Mediabunny, an open-source media library. Nothing is uploaded, so private recordings stay on your device.
Questions
Does trimming lower the quality?
Not for H.264 videos, the format of most phone and camera MP4s. The kept part is copied without re-encoding, so it's identical to the original and takes only seconds. Other video formats are re-encoded to H.264 at high quality.
Can I cut out a section from the middle?
This tool keeps one continuous part, from a start time to an end time. To remove a section in the middle, trim the video twice, once for each part you want to keep.
How do I trim to an exact time?
Type the start and end as minutes and seconds, such as 0:12.5 for twelve and a half seconds, or play the video and press "Use current time" at the right moment. You can pause and step through to find the exact frame.
Which formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM, TS and 3GP. The result is always an MP4, which plays everywhere. If your browser can't preview a format, you can still type the times.
