Which resolution should you choose?
| Resolution | Typical size (landscape) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | Full HD screens, YouTube, keeping quality from 4K footage |
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | Email, messaging, websites, phones |
| 480p | 854 × 480 | Slow connections, old devices, small previews |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | Tiny previews, very limited storage |
Phones record 1080p or 4K by default. On a phone screen, 720p looks nearly as good as 1080p and the file is around half the size.
How to resize a video
- Choose the new size.
- Choose your videos or drop them on the box above.
- Download the resized MP4s.
Videos that are already the chosen size or smaller are left alone, with a message, rather than being enlarged.
What you get
An MP4 with H.264 video at high quality and the original sound. The frame rate is kept, so motion looks the same. Resizing re-encodes the video, which takes about as long as playing it on a typical computer.
Resize or compress?
Resizing reduces the number of pixels. Compressing keeps the resolution but stores the picture more efficiently. For the smallest files, do both: the compress tool can also lower the resolution.
Recording smaller videos in the first place
If you regularly need smaller videos, set your phone to record at a lower resolution. On an iPhone, go to Settings › Camera › Record Video, which also shows roughly how much space a minute of video takes at each setting. On Android, the resolution is in the camera app’s settings or on the video screen. 1080p at 30 frames per second is plenty for sharing; 4K is best kept for footage you’ll edit.
Privacy
Videos are resized in your browser with its built-in video encoder and Mediabunny, an open-source media library. Nothing is uploaded.
Questions
What do 1080p, 720p and 480p mean?
The number is the height of the picture in pixels for a landscape video, or the width for a portrait one. 1080p landscape is 1920 × 1080, 720p is 1280 × 720 and 480p is about 854 × 480. Portrait videos are resized so their shorter side matches.
Will resizing make the file smaller?
Usually much smaller, because there are fewer pixels to store. Going from 4K to 1080p, or 1080p to 720p, typically cuts the size by half or more. For a specific file size, use the compress tools instead.
Can I make a video bigger?
No. Enlarging a video can't add detail that wasn't recorded, so the tool only makes videos smaller. Most players and sites already scale small videos up to fill the screen.
Is the aspect ratio kept?
Yes. The width and height are scaled together, so nothing is stretched or cropped. To change the shape, use the crop tool.
