Common reasons to merge PDFs
- sending one attachment instead of several, for applications and claims
- putting a cover letter, CV and certificates into a single document
- joining scanned pages that were saved as separate PDFs
- combining monthly statements or invoices for your records
- adding an appendix or signed page to a report
How to merge
- Choose your PDF files or drop them on the box above. You can add more files in several goes.
- Arrange them with the up and down arrows. The first file in the list comes first in the merged PDF.
- Select Merge PDFs, then Download.
The result is named merged.pdf. Rename it to something meaningful before sending it on.
What is kept and what isn’t
Merging copies whole pages from each file into a new PDF:
- Kept: all text, images, fonts and vector graphics, page sizes and orientations, and links within pages.
- Not kept: the bookmarks panel of the original files, digital signatures (any change to a signed PDF invalidates its signature), and file-level settings such as the original document title.
- May stop working: fillable form fields, because two forms can use the same field names. Complete and save forms first.
Changing the result
Need only some pages from a file? Split it first, or remove the pages you don’t want, then merge. If a scanned page is upside down, rotate it before or after merging. All of these tools work the same way, on your device.
Large files
Merging is quick because pages are copied rather than redrawn: dozens of ordinary documents usually take a second or two. The merged file is about the size of the inputs added together. If it is too large to email, the usual cause is scanned pages stored as large images. Converting those scans at a lower resolution, or compressing the images before making the PDF, keeps the result small.
Privacy
Merging PDFs often involves personal documents: IDs, bank statements, contracts. Here they are read and combined by your own browser. No copy is sent to a server, and closing the page removes everything from memory.
Questions
Does merging lower the quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new PDF exactly as they are, with the same text, fonts and images. Nothing is re-compressed or re-drawn.
How many PDFs can I merge?
There is no fixed limit. Your browser does the work, so very large merges of hundreds of megabytes go faster on a computer than on a phone.
Are bookmarks and fillable forms kept?
Page content and links on the pages are kept. The bookmarks panel (outline) of the original files is not carried over, and fillable form fields may stop being editable. Fill in forms before merging.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not yet. Open each protected file in your PDF app, remove the password, and merge the unlocked copies.
