How to test your webcam
- Press Start camera.
- When your browser asks, allow camera access.
- You should see yourself. The panel shows the resolution, the measured frame rate and the camera’s name.
- If you have more than one camera, choose another from the list to switch.
- Press Take a photo to save a still, or Stop to turn the camera off.
What the numbers mean
| Measure | Good for video calls | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280 × 720 or higher | 1920 × 1080 is Full HD; most laptop cameras are 720p |
| Frame rate | 24–30 fps | Below 15 fps looks jerky; low light often lowers it |
The frame rate is measured from the frames your browser actually shows, so it reflects the real result, including slowdowns from low light or a busy computer.
If the camera doesn’t work
- No permission prompt or “blocked”: click the camera icon in the address bar (or your browser’s site settings) and allow the camera, then reload.
- Black picture: check for a physical privacy shutter or a camera off switch or key (often F8 or a key with a camera symbol on laptops).
- “Camera in use”: close other apps and tabs that use the camera.
- Not listed at all: on Windows, check Settings › Privacy & security › Camera; on a Mac, check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera, and make sure your browser is allowed.
Improving how you look on camera
- Face a window or lamp, rather than having the light behind you.
- Put the camera at eye level; a stack of books under a laptop helps.
- Clean the lens; laptop lenses collect fingerprints.
Privacy
The test uses your browser’s built-in camera access. The picture stays on your screen, and the camera is released as soon as you press Stop or leave the page.
Questions
Is my webcam video recorded or sent anywhere?
No. The picture is shown only on your screen, inside your browser. It isn't recorded, stored or uploaded. If you take a photo, it's created on your device and only saved if you download it.
Why does it say the camera is in use?
Only one app can use a camera at a time on many computers. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, the Camera app or any other tab using the camera, then press Start camera again.
Why is my resolution lower than my camera's advertised resolution?
The test asks for the highest resolution the camera offers, but some cameras only reach it at lower frame rates, through specific apps, or over a fast USB port. A USB 2.0 port or hub can also limit 4K cameras to 1080p.
Why is the picture mirrored?
Most video-call apps show your own camera as a mirror image, because that's what feels natural. Other people see you the right way round. Untick "Mirror preview" to see the unmirrored image.
