How to record your screen
- Choose whether to include your microphone and the computer or tab sound.
- Press Start recording. Your browser asks what to share: the entire screen, a window, or a tab.
- To include sound from a tab or the whole system, tick the Share audio option in that window, if shown.
- Do what you want to record. Press Stop, or your browser’s Stop sharing button, when you’re done.
- Watch the recording below and download it.
Screen, window or tab?
| Choice | Records | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Entire screen | Everything on one display | Tutorials across several apps |
| Window | One app, even if other windows cover it | A focused demo of one program |
| Chrome or Edge tab | One browser tab, with its sound | Web apps, online videos, slide decks in the browser |
Sound options
- Microphone: your voice, with echo and noise reduction, for narration.
- Computer or tab sound: what the computer plays, such as a video or app sounds. Available as described in the questions below.
Both can be recorded together; they’re mixed into one sound track.
MP4 or WebM
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari can record MP4 directly, which plays everywhere. Other browsers record WebM; use the Convert to MP4 button under the recording for a file that opens in every app and uploads anywhere.
After recording
Trim the start and end with the trim video tool, make the file smaller with compress video, or save a frame as an image with video to JPG.
Privacy
Recordings are made by your browser and stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and the screen and microphone stop being captured as soon as you press Stop.
Questions
Does it work on phones?
No. Phone browsers don't let websites record the screen. On an iPhone, use the built-in Screen Recording in Control Center; on Android, use the Screen record tile in Quick Settings. This recorder works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook.
Why is there no computer sound in my recording?
Browsers can only capture sound in some cases. Chrome and Edge can record a browser tab's sound on every system, and the whole computer's sound on Windows and ChromeOS when you tick the option to share system audio. On a Mac, whole-system sound depends on your macOS and browser versions, while tab sound works. Firefox records no screen sound. Your microphone works in every browser.
Is there a time limit or watermark?
No watermark and no fixed limit. The recording is kept in your computer's memory while you record, so very long recordings (over an hour) need plenty of free memory.
Why is my recording a WebM file?
Some browsers can only record WebM. A Convert to MP4 button then appears under the recording, which converts it on your device so it plays in every app.
