What you get
A single Excel worksheet with one row for each line of text in the PDF and one column for each column the converter detects. Table rows line up under their headings, and the surrounding text (statement headings, addresses, footnotes) sits in rows of its own that you can delete. Column widths are set to fit the contents.
How to use it
- Optionally type which pages to convert, such as
1-3. Leave it empty for every page. - Choose your PDF or drop it on the box above.
- Download the
.xlsxfile. The note shows how many rows and columns were found.
Numbers you can calculate with
The main advantage over CSV is that amounts arrive as real numbers. The converter recognises the ways statements and invoices write money:
| In the PDF | In Excel |
|---|---|
1,234.56 |
1234.56, shown as 1,234.56 |
£40.00 or $40.00 |
40, shown as 40.00 |
(45.00) or 45.00- |
-45 |
00412345678 |
Text, leading zero kept |
Values written with a decimal comma, such as 1.234,56, stay as text because they can’t be told apart from other formats safely. Excel’s Data › Text to Columns converts them in a few clicks.
Which PDFs convert well
Digital PDFs with one main table per page: bank and credit card statements, invoices, price lists, timesheets and exported reports. PDFs with several tables side by side, or text wrapped around tables, may need some tidying. Scanned PDFs can’t be converted, because they contain pictures rather than text.
How it works
pdf.js, Mozilla’s open-source PDF engine, reads the position of every piece of text in your browser. The converter then groups text into lines, finds the columns that many lines share, and joins wrapped descriptions to their row. SheetJS writes the Excel file. None of it involves a server, so your financial documents stay private.
Questions
Will the Excel file look like the PDF?
No, and that's deliberate. The converter extracts the data into plain rows and columns you can work with, rather than recreating the PDF's fonts, colours and layout. One worksheet holds the rows from every page you choose.
Are amounts real numbers in Excel?
Yes, when they're unambiguous. Values like 1,234.56, -12.00, (45.00) or £40.00 become numbers with matching formatting, so SUM and sorting work straight away. Account numbers, references with leading zeros and dates stay as text so they aren't altered.
Does it work on scanned statements?
No. A scan is a picture of the page, with no text to extract. You'll see a message saying no text was found. Download the statement as a PDF from your online banking instead; those contain real text.
Is this safe for bank statements?
The PDF is read entirely in your browser and never sent to a server, which you can check yourself. Convert one file so the converter has loaded, switch off your internet connection, then convert your statement. It still works, because nothing needs a server.
