    Why convert BMP to JPG

BMP (bitmap) is a Windows image format from the 1980s that normally stores images without compression. That makes files very large: a single 1920 × 1080 screenshot is about 6 MB, and a 12-megapixel photo around 36 MB. Many websites, email services and apps reject files that big, or don’t accept BMP at all. JPG stores the same photo in a fraction of the space and is accepted everywhere.

    How to use it

    1. Pick a quality: 85% is a good balance for photos.
    2. Choose your BMP files or drop them on the box above.
    3. Download each JPG, or all of them together as a ZIP.

    JPG or PNG?

    Your BMP contains Best choice
A photo or scanned picture JPG, which gives the smallest file
A screenshot, chart, diagram or text PNG, which keeps edges sharp and stays lossless
Pixel art or an icon PNG

    What changes

    • File size drops dramatically.
    • Quality: JPG compression removes fine detail that’s hard to see; choose 90–95% for images you’ll print or edit.
    • Transparency: BMP rarely has any, but if yours does, it becomes white.
    • Dimensions: unchanged.

    Privacy

BMP files from scanners and equipment can contain sensitive material. Here they are converted entirely in your browser and never uploaded.

    Choosing the quality

    Quality Typical use
75–80% Email, chat and web uploads
    85% General use (default)
    90–95% Printing, archiving, further editing

    Converting a folder of BMPs

Scanners and lab equipment often produce dozens of BMP files at once. Open the folder in the file picker, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) to select everything, and convert them in one go. Download the results as a single ZIP to keep them together.

    Questions

How much smaller will the JPG be?

BMP files usually store every pixel uncompressed, so photos often shrink by 90% or more as JPG. A 6 MB BMP commonly becomes 300–800 KB.

    Will the JPG look worse?

At 85% quality the difference is hard to see in photos. For screenshots or graphics with text, BMP to PNG keeps edges perfectly sharp while still shrinking the file.

Where do BMP files come from?

Older Windows programs, Paint's default save format in older Windows versions, some scanners, industrial cameras and medical or lab equipment.

Can I convert many BMPs at once?

Yes. Select or drop a whole folder's worth and download the results as a ZIP.
