Using SRT files
- VLC and most players: give the SRT the same name as the video (movie.mp4 and movie.srt) and it loads automatically.
- Video editors: import the SRT as a caption or subtitle track.
- Smart TVs and Plex: put the SRT next to the video with a matching name.
Character encoding
The SRT is saved as UTF-8, which modern players and editors read correctly. Very old players that expect another encoding may show accents incorrectly; most let you choose the subtitle encoding in their settings.
Where VTT files come from
- Meeting transcripts: Zoom and Microsoft Teams can save meeting transcripts as .vtt files.
- Video platforms: subtitles downloaded from YouTube Studio for your own videos, Vimeo and many course platforms.
- Web players and screen readers: any site that uses HTML5 captions stores them as WebVTT.
Meeting transcripts often include a speaker name on every line; converting keeps those names, so the SRT still shows who is speaking. That makes the SRT useful as a readable transcript too, not only as subtitles.
Privacy
The conversion happens in your browser, and your subtitle files are never uploaded.
Questions
Why convert VTT to SRT?
SRT is supported almost everywhere, including desktop players, video editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut, smart TVs, Plex and media boxes. VTT is mainly for web players, so SRT is the safer choice for everything else.
What happens to positioning and styling?
SRT doesn't support positioning, so VTT position and alignment settings are left out and subtitles appear in the player's default place. Italic, bold and underline are kept. Speaker labels written as voice tags become the speaker's name, followed by a colon, at the start of the line.
My VTT file has no hours in the times. Is that OK?
Yes. VTT allows times like 01:02.500 without hours. They're converted to the full 00:01:02,500 format SRT requires.
Can I convert auto-generated captions?
Yes, if you have them as a .vtt file. Captions you download from a site you have rights to use convert like any other VTT file.
