    Common uses

    • Transcription: speech-to-text services and software often accept WAV most reliably.
    • Audio clean-up: removing noise or levelling a recorded talk in Audacity or Audition.
    • Video editing: replacing or improving the soundtrack, then putting it back.
    • Music: working with the audio from a live performance video you filmed.

    How to use it

Choose your MP4 videos or drop them on the box above. The audio track is decoded on your device and saved as a WAV with a download button. The note shows the recording’s length.

    Output

    Setting Value
    Format PCM WAV
    Bit depth 16-bit
    Sample rate 44.1 kHz
Channels Same as the video (usually stereo)

Video files often record sound at 48 kHz. It is resampled to 44.1 kHz, the CD standard, which every tool accepts.

    Which videos work

MP4 and M4V files with AAC sound, which covers phones, cameras, screen recorders and editing apps, convert in every current browser. Copy-protected purchases and rentals can’t be converted. For .mov recordings from iPhones and Macs, convert them to MP3 with the MOV to MP3 tool.

    Memory and long files

The video is read into memory and the full audio is decoded before saving. A computer handles files up to about 1 GB. On a phone, keep to shorter clips, and remember that the WAV itself will be large.

    Privacy

Recordings of meetings, interviews and family events are private. Here the video is processed entirely by your browser. No part of it is uploaded.

Putting edited audio back into the video

A common workflow is to extract the sound, clean it up, then replace the video’s original audio. The WAV keeps exactly the same length as the video, so it lines up when you place it back on the timeline in your video editor. Keep any edits to the middle of the recording, rather than trimming the start, and the sound stays in sync with the picture.

    Questions

    Why WAV instead of MP3?

WAV avoids a second round of lossy compression, so the audio is exactly as decoded from the video. That matters if you'll edit, clean up or mix it, and some transcription and broadcast tools require WAV.

How large will the WAV be?

About 10 MB per minute for stereo sound. An hour-long recording makes a WAV of around 600 MB.

    What's the WAV format?

PCM WAV, 16-bit at 44.1 kHz, which every audio editor, video editor and transcription service accepts.

Does it work with long videos?

Videos up to about 1 GB work on a computer. On phones, memory limits make long videos less reliable.
