    Where MOV videos come from

    • iPhone and iPad videos copied to a computer, or shared as files
    • QuickTime Player screen recordings on Mac
    • Video exported from iMovie or Final Cut Pro with QuickTime settings
    • Some cameras and drones that record QuickTime files

    Why turn MOV into MP3

    • keep the audio of a talk, sermon, class or performance you filmed
    • listen to a recorded meeting or lecture without the video
    • send the audio of a voice message or clip to someone who only needs the sound
    • transcribe a recording more easily from an audio file

    How to use it

    1. Choose the MP3 quality: 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for music.
    2. Choose your MOV videos or drop them on the box above.
    3. Download the MP3, or all results as a ZIP.

    iPhone tips

To get a video from the Photos app as a file, select it, tap the share button and choose Save to Files. On a Mac, AirDrop or a cable import gives you the file directly. If the video arrives as MP4 instead of MOV, use the MP4 to MP3 converter, which works the same way.

    Quality and length

The sound is decoded from the video and encoded as MP3 at the bitrate you choose. The MP3’s length matches the video exactly. iPhone videos usually record stereo sound, which stays stereo.

    Large videos

iPhone 4K video takes several hundred megabytes per few minutes. Files up to about 1 GB convert on a computer; on a phone, shorter videos are more reliable, because the whole file is read into memory first.

    Privacy

Personal videos stay personal: the file is read and converted in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How big will the MP3 be?

Recording length At 128 kbps At 192 kbps
5 minutes about 5 MB about 7 MB
30 minutes about 29 MB about 43 MB
1 hour about 58 MB about 86 MB

The MP3 is usually a small fraction of the MOV’s size, because the video picture makes up most of a video file.

    Questions

Why are my videos MOV files?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format. iPhones and iPads often save videos as MOV when you copy them to a computer, and QuickTime Player on Mac saves screen recordings as MOV.

    Does it work on Windows?

Yes. It runs in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, with nothing to install. You don't need QuickTime.

Why does my MOV say no audio could be read?

The video may have no sound, or use an audio format your browser can't decode. iPhone and Mac videos normally use AAC audio, which works; if one fails, try Safari or Chrome.

    Can I get WAV instead?

This page makes MP3 only; a MOV to WAV converter isn't available yet. For the best quality, choose 320 kbps. If your video is an MP4 rather than a MOV, MP4 to WAV gives uncompressed audio.
