What a CR3 file is
CR3 is Canon’s third-generation raw format, introduced in 2018. Like CR2, it stores the sensor’s raw data with Canon’s shooting information and embedded previews, but in a newer container based on the ISO base media file format, the same family as MP4. This allows more efficient compression, including Canon’s smaller C-RAW option, and dual-pixel raw data on some cameras.
The newer structure is also why CR3 support arrived late in many apps. Older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP and Windows can’t open CR3 without updates or extensions.
How to convert CR3 to JPG
- Choose the JPG quality. 85–92% looks identical to the original in almost all photos.
- Choose your
.cr3files or drop them on the box above. - Download the JPGs, individually or together as a ZIP.
What you get
- Full resolution: a 20-megapixel EOS R6 photo became a 5496 × 3670 JPG in testing.
- Neutral development: natural colours without a Picture Style applied.
- No hidden location data: GPS and camera metadata aren’t copied into the JPG.
How long it takes
Developing raw files is demanding work. Expect several seconds per photo on a typical computer, and longer for 45-megapixel EOS R5 files. Phones can convert a few photos at a time, but a computer is better for large batches.
Tested with real files
The converter was tested with a real CR3 file from a Canon EOS R6, which converted at full resolution with correct colours. It uses LibRaw, the open-source raw engine behind many photo apps, compiled to run in your browser.
Viewing CR3 without converting
- Windows: install Microsoft’s Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store, then open CR3 in Photos.
- Mac: Preview and Photos read CR3 on recent versions of macOS.
- Canon: Digital Photo Professional is free for Canon camera owners.
Privacy
Your photos are developed in the browser and never uploaded. There’s no waiting for 30 MB raw files to upload and download again.
Questions
Which Canon cameras make CR3 files?
Canon cameras released since 2018, starting with the EOS M50 and EOS R. That includes the EOS R range (R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100 and others), the EOS M series from the M50 on, and recent DSLRs such as the 90D and 250D. Older Canon cameras use CR2.
Does it convert C-RAW files?
C-RAW is a compressed variant of CR3 that Canon cameras can save to make smaller files. It's still a CR3 file, and LibRaw, the engine used here, reads it.
Why won't Windows or my old editing software open CR3?
CR3 uses a different structure from the older CR2 format, so software from before about 2019 often can't read it. Windows Photos needs the Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG avoids the problem entirely.
Why does the JPG look flatter than the camera's JPG?
Canon cameras apply a Picture Style, sharpening and noise reduction to their own JPGs. The raw data is developed neutrally here, which looks a little softer and less contrasty, but keeps all the detail.
