    Why AVIF files need converting

Websites increasingly deliver images as AVIF because the files are tiny and load fast. The catch comes when you save one of those pictures. Many photo viewers, older versions of editing software, office programs, social platforms and upload forms don’t accept .avif yet. JPG is accepted practically everywhere.

    You might need this if:

    • you saved a picture from a website and it ends in .avif
    • an app shows “unsupported format” when you open the file
    • a form or marketplace only accepts JPG or PNG uploads
    • you need to print the image or put it in a document

    How to use this converter

Choose one or more AVIF files, or drop them on the box above. Your browser decodes each image with its built-in AVIF support, writes a JPG, and adds a download button. No extra download is needed.

    Choosing a quality setting

Most AVIF images on the web are already compressed hard, so very high JPG quality only inflates the file. 85% is a good balance. Use 90–95% if you plan to edit or print the picture, and 70% if you need a small file for chat or email.

What changes in the converted file

    • Transparency becomes white, because JPG has none. Use a PNG converter if you need transparent areas kept.
    • Animated AVIF files become a JPG of the first frame.
    • HDR and wide colour are mapped to standard sRGB.
    • Metadata is not copied.
    • Dimensions stay exactly the same.

If an AVIF file won’t convert

    • Check your browser version. This converter relies on the browser’s own AVIF decoder. Safari added AVIF in version 16.4 (2023), so older iPhones and Macs that can’t update may not convert AVIF. Chrome, Edge or Firefox on the same device will.
    • Check the file opens. Drag it into a new browser tab. If the browser can’t show it either, the file is damaged or only partly downloaded; save it again from the original page.
    • Very large images above roughly 100 megapixels can exceed what a phone browser can hold in memory. Try on a computer.

    Questions

    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec, released in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. It produces some of the smallest image files available, so many websites now serve pictures as AVIF.

Which browsers can run this converter?

Any browser that can show AVIF images, which includes current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 16.4 or later. If your browser is older, you'll see a message asking you to update it.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses much more efficiently than JPG. A JPG with similar visual quality is often two to three times larger. That's expected.

    What about HDR AVIF images?

They are converted to standard dynamic range, because JPG can't store HDR. The brightest highlights may look a little less punchy.
