How to convert AAC to MP3

    1. Choose the MP3 quality. 192 kbps is recommended for music.
    2. Choose your .aac files or drop them on the box above.
    3. Download the MP3s individually or as a ZIP.

For .m4a files, such as iTunes downloads and iPhone voice memos, use the M4A to MP3 converter.

    Where .aac files come from

    • Voice and call recorders on some Android phones.
    • Radio and stream recordings, which use raw AAC (ADTS).
    • Audio extracted from videos with tools that save the soundtrack without a container.
    • Dashcams and action cameras that save audio separately.

    AAC and MP3 compared

    AAC MP3
Quality at the same bitrate Slightly better Good
Plays on Most modern devices Practically everything
Common in iPhone, YouTube, streaming Music libraries, car stereos, older players

If a device or app plays AAC, there’s no need to convert. Convert when you need the file to play everywhere.

    Choosing the quality

Match or exceed the original bitrate when you can: an AAC file at 128 kbps converts well to MP3 at 160–192 kbps. Going higher doesn’t add quality that wasn’t there, but it does avoid losing more.

    Playing AAC without converting

Most modern players already handle AAC: VLC, Windows Media Player and the Media Player app on Windows, Music and QuickTime on Mac, and all phones. If a file plays fine where you need it, keep it as AAC. Convert when an older player, car stereo or app refuses it.

For a whole folder of AAC files, select them all at once; they convert one after another and can be saved together as a ZIP.

    Privacy

The audio is decoded by your browser and encoded with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder, on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

    Questions

What's the difference between AAC and M4A?

AAC is the audio codec; M4A is the MP4 container that usually holds it. A .aac file is raw AAC audio without the container, common from some recorders, radio and streams. An .m4a file is AAC inside MP4, as used by iPhones and iTunes. Both convert to MP3.

    Is AAC better than MP3?

At the same bitrate, AAC generally sounds a little better, which is why Apple and YouTube use it. MP3's advantage is that absolutely everything plays it.

    Will converting lose quality?

Slightly, because the audio is compressed again. At 192 kbps or more, it's very hard to hear any difference. Keep the original AAC if you'll want the best quality later.

Why won't my car stereo play AAC files?

Many car stereos and older MP3 players only support MP3 and WMA. Converting to MP3 is the simplest fix.
