    Why MP3

MP3 is the most compatible audio format there is. Every phone, computer, car stereo, smart speaker and music app plays it, and it keeps files small: about 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps, compared with about 10 MB for WAV.

    Quality guide

Bitrate Size per minute Use for
128 kbps ~0.96 MB Speech, podcasts, voice notes
192 kbps ~1.44 MB Everyday music listening
    256 kbps ~1.92 MB High-quality music
    320 kbps ~2.4 MB Maximum MP3 quality

Converting from a lossless file (WAV or FLAC) gives the best MP3. Converting from another lossy format (M4A, OGG) can’t add back detail the original didn’t have.

Converting the same MP3 again and again lowers its quality a little each time, so always convert from the best original you have.

    Privacy

Files are decoded by your browser and encoded with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there’s no daily limit.

    Questions

Which formats can I convert to MP3?

WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus and MP3 audio files, plus the sound track of MP4, M4V, MOV and WebM videos. You can mix formats in one batch.

Why convert an MP3 to MP3?

To change its quality. A large 320 kbps MP3 can be made smaller at 128 kbps for a phone or for sharing speech, such as an audiobook or lecture.

    Which formats aren't supported?

WMA, AIFF and some older formats, which most browsers can't decode. Copy-protected music from stores and streaming services can't be converted either.

    Which quality should I choose?

128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for music (recommended), 256–320 kbps for the best music quality. Higher settings make bigger files.
