    What an M4R file is

M4R is the iPhone’s ringtone format: AAC audio in an MPEG-4 file, the same as an M4A file but with a different extension so iPhones recognise it as a tone. This converter creates it directly from an MP3, trimmed to the 40-second limit.

    How to make the ringtone

    1. Enter the start point in seconds (0 to start at the beginning).
    2. Choose your MP3 or drop it on the box above.
    3. Download the .m4r file. The note shows which part of the song was used, for example 1:05–1:45.

How to put it on your iPhone

On a Mac (macOS Catalina or later):

    1. Connect your iPhone with a cable and select it in the Finder sidebar.
    2. Drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone window.
    3. On the iPhone, go to Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Ringtone and choose it.

    On Windows:

    1. Open iTunes (or the Apple Devices app) and connect your iPhone.
    2. Drag the .m4r file onto your iPhone under On My Device, or into its Tones section.
    3. Choose it in Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Ringtone.

Without a computer: save the file to the Files app, then open GarageBand on the iPhone, import the audio into a project and use Share › Ringtone. GarageBand is free from Apple.

    Tips for a good ringtone

    • Pick a part that is recognisable within the first two or three seconds.
    • Think about the repeat: the ringtone loops while your phone rings, so a section that starts and ends cleanly sounds best.
    • Avoid very quiet intros; a ringtone needs to be heard.

    Technical details

    • Format: AAC at 192 kbps in an M4A-type MPEG-4 file, saved with the .m4r extension
    • Length: up to 40 seconds, with 0.05-second fades in and out
    • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz

    Privacy and rights

The song is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded. Only use music you own or have the right to use for a personal ringtone.

    Questions

Why is the ringtone only 40 seconds?

iPhones don't accept ringtones longer than 40 seconds. The converter takes 40 seconds from the start point you choose, with short fades so it doesn't click.

    Which browsers work?

Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox can't create the AAC audio that M4R files use, so it shows a message asking you to switch browser.

How do I pick the best part of the song?

Play the song and note when the part you want begins, for example 1:05. Enter that as 65 seconds in the Start at box.

Can I make an alert or text tone?

Yes. The same M4R file can be chosen as a text or alert tone. Shorter clips, under about 30 seconds, suit alerts best.
